In 1997 Red Deer, Alberta was home to the conception of what would become one of the most popular rock bands in the region: The Frank. By 1999, drummer Will Gilgan, guitarist Denver Swainson and bassist Ryan Turple had enough quality material to record the album Everything Is Normal at McKee Music and Sound in Red Deer.
Following the release of the album, the band spent some valuable time maturing, playing, adding and deleting members until 2003 when the band decided to shit or get off the pot. Turple got off the pot while Swainson, Gilgan and new rhythm guitarist Sara Page have been shitting ever since. Alan Keith replaced Turple and The Frank got busy writing and gigging in an effort to take the next step. In the fall of 2005 the band independently released Blackfalds Revisited to an ever-growing following of eager listeners. The album was recorded and produced by Carson Cole in the coup at Brownsound Studios east of Edmonton, Alberta.
Despite nearly immediate attention from local radio The Frank would not be able to tour the album as Bassist Alan Keith had announced his resignation just prior to the release of Blackfalds Revisited. The allure of the Alberta oil patch promised a financially sound future for Keith and the Frank found themselves once again searching for a bass player.
Enter into the picture current bassist, Joe Miller, a long time friend and supporter of The Frank. Joe had never touched a bass before but had a background in keyboards and guitar and met the new challenge head on. It didn’t take long for Miller to carve a niche into The Frank with his Beatle bass and always-wild hairstyles.
With the addition of Miller the Frank has morphed into a different type of beast all together, with an audience that never fails to show and Blackfalds Revisited well into it’s third printing all eyes are on the future. With a U.S.A. tour planned for the middle of 2009 and preliminary recording of new material underway, The Frank continues to set a bar for itself ever higher and we are all eager to see what they turn out next. |
